Nowadays, market globalisation and stiff worldwide competition require flexible, demand-driven, and reconfigurable production systems that can adapt to the requirements of the increasing reduction in product life cycle and rapid changes in market demand. The advent and development of network technology (especially the Internet) and distributed computing technology make it possible for geographically dispersed manufacturing resources to be integrated and deployed effectively and efficiently. In addition, manufacturing enterprises can expand their throughput within a short time and rapidly reduce the production cycle via transferring certain jobs to other available manufacturing resources in the globalised manufacturing environment, viz., manufacturing enterprises can expand their throughput through the dynamic formation of virtual job shops according to the production requirements. Owing to more open manufacturing environments and rapid changes of market demands, the traditional centralised scheduling approaches are not suitable for this open distributed manufacturing environment. This paper proposes a distributed scheduling approach in which a multi-agent solution towards a 'task-machine' assignment is presented. The main points of discussion are the formation of a virtual job shop that is based on market mechanism and the distributed scheduling approach based on negotiation. 1. Introduction The globalisation of market and stiff worldwide competition compel manufacturing enterprises to produce goods rapidly, with high quality and low cost so as to be able to better respond to rapid changes in market demand and consumer expectation. The advent and development of the network and distributed computing technologies has enabled manufacturing enterprises to make use of geographically dispersed manufacturing resources to expand their throughput and increase the speed of response to fluctuant customers' demands. A flexible, demand-driven, and reconfigurable production system with advanced management mechanisms, highly efficient information processing, and flexible production scheduling and planning is an effective …

Development and Simulation of Methods for Scheduling and Coordinating Decentralized Job Shops Using Multi-Computer Systems
This paper presents a new simulation methodology for scheduling and coordinating decentralized job shops using multi-computer systems. The parallel working subsystems of an integrated production system are distributed across a network of computers. Utilizing the special structure of parallel processor architectures new coordination and scheduling rules for job shops are designed and evaluated. ...
متن کاملAgent-based approach for cooperative scheduling
This paper studies the multi-factory production (MFP) network scheduling problem where a number of different individual factories join together to form a MFP network, in which these factories can operate more economically than operating individually. However, in such network which known as virtual production network with self-interested factories with transportation times, each individual facto...
متن کاملA multi Agent System Based on Modified Shifting Bottleneck and Search Techniques for Job Shop Scheduling Problems
This paper presents a multi agent system for the job shop scheduling problems. The proposed system consists of initial scheduling agent, search agents, and schedule management agent. In initial scheduling agent, a modified Shifting Bottleneck is proposed. That is, an effective heuristic approach and can generate a good solution in a low computational effort. In search agents, a hybrid search ap...
متن کاملA knowledge-based NSGA-II approach for scheduling in virtual manufacturing cells
This paper considers the job scheduling problem in virtual manufacturing cells (VMCs) with the goal of minimizing two objectives namely, makespan and total travelling distance. To solve this problem two algorithms are proposed: traditional non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (NSGA-II) and knowledge-based non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm (KBNSGA-II). The difference between these algor...
متن کاملDistributed Plan Maintenance for Scheduling and Execution
Within the pede project we investigate the generation and execution of plans in distributed environments. Multiple, communicating agents perform tasks like generating process plans and machine schedules and controlling their execution. A general problem in such environments is how to handle unexpected events like high priority jobs and machine breakdowns. A cooperative approach, where agents co...
